PARIS, Aug 18 '97 -
UEFA have awarded Steaua Bucharest a 3-0 victory over Paris
Saint-Germain after it was revealed the French side fielded a
suspended player, Laurent Fournier, in their Qualifying Round 1st Leg game in
Bucharest last Wednesday.
Fournier, who played the whole
match, was ineligible because of bookings from last season. Bucharest
appealed against his presence to UEFA. "We forgot about the suspension
of Laurent Fournier," claimed Claude Le Roy, the Paris club's sporting
director, and went on to say that the PSG players nevertheless remained
"confident" that they can still qualify - a feat which requires them
to win by 4 clear goals in the 2nd
Leg.
As to how the error was discovered, one report states that
Steaua officials were surprised by the news from Paris and that they
had made no protest to UEFA about Fournier. Another report claims
however that it was Steaua's initial protest that brought the matter
to a head. Either way, it should make for a very interesting match
next Wednesday!
