Qualifying Criteria

Standings within groups are determined by the following means:

  1. Highest points gained in all games
  2. Highest points in direct encounters between teams
  3. Highest goal difference in direct encounters between teams
  4. Most Away Goals in direct encounters between teams
  5. Highest goal difference in all games
  6. Most Away Goals in all games
  7. Team's Country's UEFA coefficient at beginning of season

Thus, to resolve the complex situation at the top of Group B where Juventus, Rosenborg and Galatasary finished level on points, it is necessary to compare the points earned in direct encounters between the 3 tying teams, ignoring results against Bilbao. This comparison is NOT performed by UEFA on a pairwise basis but rather in a league-table-like model:

GROUP C COUNTRY P W D L GF GA PTS
Juventus Italy 4 1 3 0 6 4 6
Galatasaray Turkey 4 1 2 1 6 6 5
Rosenborg Norway 4 1 1 2 4 6 4

The criteria by which the teams are measured when determining the top 2 runners-up are:

  1. Most points gained
  2. Highest Goal Difference
  3. Most Goals Scored
  4. Most Away Goals Scored
  5. Team's country's UEFA coefficient at beginning of season
  6. Team's UEFA coefficient at beginning of season
resulting in the following table for 1998-99:

RUNNERS-UP COUNTRY P W D L GF GA PTS
Real Madrid Spain 6 4 0 2 17 8 12
Manchester United England 6 2 4 0 20 11 10
Galatasaray Turkey 6 2 2 2 8 8 8
Benfica Portugal 6 2 2 2 8 9 8
Lens France 6 2 2 2 5 6 8
Croatia Zagreb Croatia 6 2 2 2 5 7 8
